Does my cadet training count towards the BTEC?
Yes it can make up us much as 77% of the BTEC.
Is there extra work involved?
There will be extra work, and it varies depending on what type of service Cadet you are. Your instructor will be able to give you more details.
Do I need to complete a full Duke of Edinburgh Award first?
No, only Bronze Expedition training or Physical Recreation would count towards the BTEC.
How big are the groups?
On average there is one adult leader for every 10-12 cadets.
How long does it take?
You’ll have up to two years – but it probably won’t take that long.
I’ve already done Adventure Training - will it count towards the BTEC?
If you feel you have already completed the AT requirements, ask your instructor to send us a letter from the Unit stating which two AT activities have been completed. These can include any Duke of Edinburgh Award certificates and/or certain Leadership courses. You must complete two activities & a residential stay/annual camp.
Can I enrol and complete the Aviation Studies BTEC?
No. The Aviation Studies BTEC is only offered through the ATC.
I now have a Silver or Gold Award - what happens next?
Your instructor needs to send us proof so we can update your records.
Do I have to do the Bronze or Silver DofE before the Gold level?
No, it doesn't matter where you begin.
What Sporting Achievements count?
If you have competed at Unit, County, Country, Olympics or School level, your unit instructor will need to send us a list of the activities AND at what level you competed. This can also include copies of letters or certificates from your school.
What are the deadlines for units?
The Unit 1 Project can only be completed between September and February.

What instrument do I need to play?
Anything – from parade bass drum and voice to Drum Major.
Do I need to be able to read music?
No, just play an instrument.
My Unit doesn’t have a band!
Don’t worry – anything you’ve done with music outside of cadets may count, whether it’s a school band, orchestra, rock band or choir. You can speak to our Music Department on 01276 601709 if you want more details.
I’m doing GCSE Music – is the BTEC worth it?
The BTEC is worth four GCSEs if you get a Distinction!
How do I register?
Just download a VQF1 form, enter your details and blob the music box. Once completed, return to Music Department, CVQO Ltd, 3 Archipelago, Lyon Way, Camberley, Surrey, GU16 7ER through your VQ Officer or Unit Training Officer.
What performances count towards the BTEC?
CVQO has mapped across a lot of activities cadet musicians participate in - (see exemption matrix). It is essential you let us know what you have already done so we can apply it to your learner record. This means that you will not have to do so much written work as you may think! If you have any doubts or further questions, you can speak to out Music Department on 01276 601709
Are there any timing restrictions?
There are two deadlines; you must complete Workbook 1 within nine months of enrolling with us and completed Workbook 2 within two years.

How do I get on the course?
First of all you’ll need to have done at least Unit 1 of the Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Public Services.
Then we need to make you sure your unit or school is approved to deliver Level 3 – they will need to contact us about this.
Can I gain UCAS points?
Yes, between 40 and 360 points - the number you can get depends on whether you take an Award, Certificate or Diploma, and your overall grade.

How is my work assessed?
We’ll give you workbooks for each unit. You can work through them on the computer, and email them for marking.
Will there be lessons?
Yes, and they will be part of your school timetable, but you’ll do the practical bits on cadet leadership and AT courses.
What resources are available?
Currently BTEC Public Services publications are being used as support material for the teachers. It is planned to extend that to a wider range of Edexcel support material. CVQO is in the process of developing a Moodle Virtual Learning Environment, so that cadets can access support for their learning through interactive material.

Do I have to be enrolled on a BTEC Qualification first?
No.
How do I get onto an ILM course?
You need to be a senior cadet who has completed one of these courses:
• ACF Master Cadet Course
• ATC Junior Leaders’ Course
• CCF (RN) Leadership Course
What do I have to do?
There are three parts:
• Pass the relevant cadet course (see above);
• Complete a 750 to 1,000-word mini project based around planning a local community event. This will demonstrate team-leading skills you’ve learned;
• Pass a series of short answer questions.
You’ll be assessed on a personal look back on your performance, and get feedback from an assessor as part of the process.
Do I get anything else?
As well as the qualification you’ll be able to get a free Studying Membership with ILM for six months.
