The 21 day expedition provides a unique opportunity for the ten cadets. They will face the challenge of remote areas, sometimes on foot, and camping in primitive conditions in wilderness areas.

The expedition began with a 7 day Game Ranger Course, in which the cadets will learn bush crafts and game conservancy management principles, taking them into close quarters with the sights, sounds and smells of South Africa wildlife. This will be followed by visits to the Zulu communities at Rorkes Drift and Isandlwana, and guided tours of the famous battlefields of the Anglo Zulu War.

The cadets will then spend four days in the Hluhuluwe/ Imfolozi Game Reserve and four days in the Drakensberg Mountain living in caves. The cadets will explore all aspects of the African Bush and be taken closer to nature then most will get again. The final phase of the trip involves some outdoor activities, and a short time to enjoy the rest of South Africa.

The link below shows a news feed, which is being updated regularly by the cadets and CVQO staff on the trip.

Duke of Westminster Ten head for South Africa

The ten finalists of this year’s Duke of Westminster Awards have now set off for South Africa, after a selection process that began with around 215 nominations. The final five prize-winners enjoyed a presentation ceremony and luncheon at the Cavalry and Guards Club in Piccadilly, London, before setting off from the Cadet Training Centre, Frimley Park, on a three week trip to South Africa.
